In that case, kombucha can offer you a lot of versatility as you can make it with many spices, fruit, and other flavorings, which, when mixed, give you a fizzy tea.

So if you love tea or want a proven way to benefit your gut and overall health, this is an option for you, and there’s no better mix than ginger or turmeric, which we’ll show you how to make into a kombucha below.

What Is Kombucha?

You might be wondering what the process looks like, so this fizzy tea is fermented and contains a probiotic, a good bacteria known to boost health benefits in many ways, the main one being gut health.

It’s made from bacteria, yeast, sugar, and tea and has a yellow or orange color, so you’ll notice how sour it tastes when you taste it.

You can do this by fermenting sweetened black or green tea with a colony of bacteria and yeast, which break down the sugars you find in the tea, and releases that friendly bacteria as a result, which after the process, becomes fizzy.

Now you’re sold on the idea and want to make some yourself, and here is where we provide the ingredients and the steps you can take to make the process successful.

Ingredients You’ll Need (For 1 Bottle)

  • One tablespoon of fresh chopped ginger
  • One tablespoon of freshly chopped turmeric root
  • Some finished kombucha
  • A 1-liter bottle or jar

How To Make It

  • Start by transferring the finished kombucha from the fermenting jar into your 1-liter bottle, which ideally has a swing-top or a seal on top.
  • Now add turmeric and ginger to this bottle and a teaspoon for each bottle or jar you want to use.
  • Make sure to close and seal the bottle or jar, as you’ll need to leave them for 24-48 hours for the second fermentation.
  • After this, you can open and test the flavor and transfer it to the fridge. If you find any ginger or turmeric pieces, you can use a filter to remove them.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Kombucha?

What Are The Health Benefits Of Kombucha?

Now you know how simple it is to make this kombucha, it may be a good idea to see what the benefits of this drink are.

Studies have reported that this drink has various health benefits that can help you manage certain conditions, so below is an overview of each.

Can Improve Gut Health

We’ve mentioned how probiotics are a good thing as they can help to improve the natural balance of bacteria in your gut and is even more effective if an illness or condition has disrupted this.

Even though you can find these in yogurts or supplements, some people may struggle to consume or keep these down (see also ‘What Supplement Helps Reduce Lactic Acid?‘).

Still, the extent of this benefit is restricted when we talk about foods and beverages that contain probiotics.

It can also aid with issues such as diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease, so a diet rich in probiotics can alleviate these issues.

Can Improve Liver Health

What is known is that kombucha contains antioxidants that can help to fight molecules in the body that could pose a risk to cells.

Some studies have confirmed this benefit, but this has only been tested on animals with drug-induced liver damage.

What we know is that the kombucha with garlic and turmeric could go further by reducing liver inflammation while preventing diseases that are also linked to high blood pressure and other chronic diseases.

More testing of kombucha is likely needed to confirm this benefit fully, as it hasn’t been explored in humans.

However, as we know the benefits of turmeric and garlic, we can still see a justification for using them in this way.

Can Help With Mental Health

Some sources have suggested that drinking kombucha as part of a balanced diet can promote positive mental health, as there is a link between probiotics and depression.

As good as this sounds, there aren’t any reliable studies that show if this could boost moods, relieve depressive symptoms, or any other issue that results from mental health.

Still, it does matter that other aspects of a person’s lifestyle are also taken into account.

Could Help Manage Type 2 Diabetes

As we know, the drink has antioxidants, which can be used to reduce the glucose level and the likelihood of some types of diabetes and cancer, but this will depend on how the kombucha is made.

This is because the drinks are high in sugar which will raise blood sugar levels, so as you need sugar to make the kombucha, this can seem counterproductive.

Still, there is a way to lower the amount of sugar present, and all you need to do is extend the fermentation process.

You could even go further by producing kombucha by adding sweeteners afterward.

Even though this process can take up to 60 days, it will be worth it for a healthier and more sustainable way to get your superfoods in.

If you want more flavors that are targeted, you could use orange juice, raspberry, ginseng, vanilla, kiwis, cinnamon, lemon, and even chia seeds, all of which have properties that are beneficial to you in some way.

The Bottom Line

While it can be very beneficial to gut health, this kombucha with turmeric and ginger is packed with goodness that can be balanced with a healthy diet to the point where you can see the benefits for yourself, considering the taste of this may not be appealing to everyone (see also “Pineapple Carrot Turmeric Spritzer“).

Now you know how to make kombucha, you have a healthier alternative that you know the contents of and leads the way to a healthier lifestyle.
